The Ottawa Dental Society is pleased to announce the Capital Dental Symposium IV on Friday, February 7, 2020. This one-day event will be held at the Ottawa Conference and Event Centre, 200 Coventry Road, Ottawa.
2020 is the 125th Anniversary of the Ottawa Dental Society and we will be kicking off our celebrations with a Celebration Cocktail Party on Thursday, February 6 from 18:30-21:30. Our keynote speaker Canadian-born Neil Pasricha, is a "pied piper of happiness" who dazzles audiences with ideas that skyrocket happiness into the stratosphere. With infectious enthusiasm, heartfelt authenticity and a "what works" authority, Neil draws on the latest research in happiness. Many may be familiar with this New York Times bestseller, "The Book of Awesome".
Our goal for the symposium is to provide an opportunity for general dentists, specialists, and the whole dental team to learn and explore the latest in technology and materials through lectures, hands-on workshops, and exhibits. We have invited a group of speakers to present a range of topics including oral surgery, endodontics, pharmacology, restorative dentistry, periodontics, implant therapy, and office management. Our theme this year is "Celebrating Canadian Talent" and all our speakers are from Canada.

“Functional Pediatric Oral Health”
Course Outline:
This presentation will cover concepts of what is meant by functional oral health. Areas that will be addressed will be prenatal development, and areas that predispose an individual to aberrant developmental patterns as they grow, oral restrictions and their immediate impact as well as long term impacts on health and development. Tongue function, nasal breathing, sleep and posture as components of oral health will also be discussed.

Biography:
Dr. Clive Friedman was born in Johannesburg and has trained and worked in South Africa, Israel, England, USA and Canada. He obtained his specialty in pediatric dentistry in New Orleans and has a special interest in persons with special needs, behaviour, prevention, education and wellness. He teaches at both the University of Toronto and the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry. He has been president of the International Association of Disability and Oral Health and the Academy of Dentistry for Persons with Disability. Currently he sits on ICC - International Clinical Council of Fibrodysplasia Ossificans. He is also on the editorial board for the British Society for Disability and Oral Health Journal. His current interest is in transitioning patients with special needs from a pediatric practice to a GP practice and the impact of tethered tissue on long term growth and development.

“Orthodontics and Sleep Disordered Breathing: Separating Fact from Fiction”
Course Outline:
Recently interest in obstructive sleep disorders has led to much speculation within the dental profession making it difficult to separate fact from fiction. This presentation will be a succinct review of published literature and recent clinical trial data, providing a clear picture of the evidence base on the topic. The relationship between sleep disordered breathing and craniofacial growth and development, as well as the current evidence of managing pediatric sleep disorders with dentofacial orthopedics will be directly addressed.

Biography:
Dr. Benjamin Pliska is an Associate Professor of the University of British Columbia Faculty of Dentistry and maintains private practices in Vancouver as a certified specialist in Orthodontics. Dr. Pliska is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario School of Dentistry, and obtained his Certificate in Orthodontics and Master’s Degree in Dentistry from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Pliska lectures both locally and internationally on his research interests, which include airway imaging and pediatric sleep medicine.

Course Outline:
The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) has published the official proceedings from the 2017 World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions. Highlights from the 2017 proceedings include a re-categorization of various forms of periodontitis, the development of a novel staging and grading system for periodontitis, and the inaugural classification for peri-implant diseases and conditions. Major changes included a new section classifying gingival diseases, replacement of the term “chronic periodontitis” with the term “periodontitis” and replacement of severity designations in specific locations with full mouth staging and grading levels.
In this lecture we will review the advantages of a periodontitis case definition system based on Staging and Grading.
The lecture is followed by a workshop in which the attendees will be given several periodontal disease cases to diagnose in small groups, based on the new staging and grading system.

- Learn how the worldwide 2017 consensus was reached and how the new classification differs from the original 1999 version.
- Familiarize yourself with an innovative model for identifying and diagnosing periodontal disease that introduces a multi-dimensional staging and grading system, similar to the method used in oncology.

Biography:
Dr. Kiarash is the Director of the Department of Periodontics, Faculty of Dentistry at McGill University. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and an active member of the International Team of Implantology (ITI). Dr. Kiarash is the Chairman for the Predoctoral Directors Organization of the American Academy of Periodontology, as well as a voting member on the Education Committee for the AAP. He is the President-Elect of the Canadian Academy of Periodontology and the co-organizer for the Annual Scientific Session as well as the Long-Term Strategic Planning Committee for the CAP. Dr. Kiarash is the Study Club Director for the “Montreal Rive-Sud” ITI Study Club.

The presentation will focus on pre-operative assessment of a surgical patient aimed at identifying risk factors that may result in potential complications. Some of the topics that will be included are: considerations regarding medically compromised patients, medications such as blood thinners and bisphosphonates (and other related medications), and a history of radiation exposure. Real patient cases will be used to illustrate the examples. The objective of the presentation is to increase awareness of risk factors associated with surgical patients and to provide guidelines to decrease the occurrence of complications. Biography:
Grace Bradley obtained her DDS degree at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry in 1979, after which she trained in the Oral Pathology residency program from 1980 to 1983. She received her MSc. degree in 1984 and continued research training as a fellow of the Medical Research Council of Canada at the Ontario Cancer Institute / Princess Margaret Hospital from 1983 – 1987. She obtained her fellowship in Oral Pathology at the Royal College of Dentists of Canada in 1986 and was appointed as Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto in 1987 and cross-appointed as staff dentist (Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine) at the Department of Dentistry, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center. Currently she holds the appointment of Professor and Director of the graduate program in Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine at U. of Toronto and Director of the Oral Pathology laboratory. She has participated in the Oral Pathology Diagnostic Service at the Faculty of Dentistry since 1987. Her academic interests are the use of virtual microscopy in undergraduate and graduate teaching of Oral Pathology, and the pathology of oral squamous carcinoma and precursor lesions.
Biography:
Dr. Marco Magalhaes is a clinician-scientist, director of the Cancer Invasion and Metastasis Laboratory (CIMlab) at the Faculty of Dentistry, staff oral pathologist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and assistant professor at the Faculty of Dentistry, cross-appointed to Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Magalhaes received his PhD in cell biology at the University of Toronto in 2009 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Cancer Centre before returning to the University of Toronto to complete his residency in Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine. Dr. Magalhaes has several research projects in the area of oral cancer and oral pathology and is a member of the Network for Canadian Oral Health and Research (NCOHR) oral cancer group. His main area of interest is the progression of oral lesions to oral cancer and understanding how the oral microenvironment can influence malignant transformation. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.

Linkages between periodontitis and overall health have been proposed for numerous years without a true understanding of the mechanisms underlying these connections. Recent findings however, now suggest that inflammation is at the core of these relationships. As research continues to evolve rapidly in this emerging discipline, it is critical that oral health professionals have a thorough understanding of the inflammatory process in the body and the mechanisms involved linking oral and systemic health. Additionally, practitioners must be fully informed of the most current developments and deficiencies in the literature in order to provide the best counsel and care for their patients. This presentation will focus on new developments in the critical role of inflammation and its impact on the whole area of oral-systemic medicine along with a discussion of the most current research outcomes in not only more established oral-systemic linkages, but several newly proposed relationships. The role of oral health professionals in this dynamic new area of health will be discussed including suggested therapies and strategies for improving the overall health of the public.

- A new look at the most current literature derived from the “Human Microbiome Project” and how the concept of “dysbiosis” relates to oral diseases.
- An overview of chronic periodontitis from a systemic inflammatory perspective.

Biography:
Salme Lavigne was the founding Director of the dental hygiene program at Confederation College (Thunder Bay, ON); Associate Professor & Chair of the Department of Dental Hygiene at Wichita State University (Wichita, KS); and Professor & Director, School of Dental Hygiene at the University of Manitoba. Currently, she holds the title of Senior Scholar at the University of Manitoba and is the Scientific Editor of the Canadian Journal of Dental Hygiene (CJDH). Salme holds a Diploma in Dental Hygiene (University of Toronto), a BA in Biomedical Anthropology (Lakehead University), a Master of Science in Dental Hygiene Education (University of Missouri-Kansas City) and a PhD in Community Health Sciences and Epidemiology (University of Manitoba). She has served as President of the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association; Chair and Councillor of the Section on Dental Hygiene Education for the American Dental Education Association; Commissioner, Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada and was the Chair, Board of Directors of the Canadian Foundation for Dental Hygiene Research and Education. Salme is the recipient of Alumni of Distinction Awards from the University of Toronto and the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Dentistry and recently received the Life Membership Award from the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association. In addition to being the Scientific Editor of the CJDH, she is also currently a reviewer for three international journals, has authored chapters in three textbooks, has numerous publications in both national and international peer reviewed journals and has delivered over 100 continuing education presentations in Canada, the US, Scandinavia, Holland, Italy, Switzerland, Australia, China and South Africa. Her research interests lie in periodontics; oral-systemic health connections; community health and the aging baby boomers. Pharmacology is the study of Drugs and their effects on the human body. Chronic medical conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, endocrine disorders and neurological conditions are very prevalent worldwide. In this course we will discuss the top 10 prescribed drugs in North America. We will review the pharmacological actions of these drugs, any reported adverse reactions and drug interactions associated with their use. We will review the effects of these medications on the oral cavity and any needed dental modifications for these patients. Specific emphasis will be given to the effects and interactions of these commonly prescribed drugs with those often given by dentists namely, local anaesthetics, analgesics, antibiotics and antifungals.

Biography:
Dr. Aviv Ouanounou is an assistant professor of pharmacology and Preventive Dentistry at the faculty of dentistry, University of Toronto. He received both his DDS and MSc at the University of Toronto. He teaches pharmacology and Preventive Dentistry to undergraduate and graduate students and is also a clinical instructor and Treatment Plan Coordinator. Dr. Ouanounou won numerous teaching awards including wining “Best Teacher of the Year Award” three times: in 2013, 2015 and just recently in 2019. Also, Dr. Ouanounou is the recipient of the 2014-2015 prestigious Dr. Bruce Hord Master Teacher Award for excellence in teaching at the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Toronto. Dr. Ouanounou is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists. He is a member of the American Academy of Pain Management and the American College of Clinical Pharmacology. This lecture will review the major public policy issues facing dentistry today. These include:
- The place of dentistry within Canada’s health care system;
- Demographic changes, oral disease, and access to dental care;
- Changes in insurance, provider supply, and competition in the dental care market;
- The corporatization and commercialization of dentistry;
- Ethical decision-making in dentistry.
The session begins with an historical perspective on the development of Canada’s health and dental care systems, and moves to discussing the various public policy issues outlined above. Each topic is separate, but build on each other into the overarching aim of demonstrating their relevance to clinical practice and organized dentistry. All presentations are grounded in rich media and quantitative and qualitative data. Debate and discussion are encouraged throughout the session.

Biography:
Carlos Quiñonez is a dental public health specialist, associate professor and program director at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto (U of T). He graduated with his DMD from the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Manitoba (U of M) in 1998, and then completed his MSc at the U of M’s Faculty of Medicine in 2004. He then completed a PhD and dental public health specialty at the U of T in 2009. Carlos’ research centres on the politics and economics of dentistry, with a specific focus on health and social equity. He is the author of over 200 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and government reports, and regularly consults with government and non-governmental agencies on issues of dental care policy. He is the Editor of Ontario Dentist, the Ontario Dental Association’s professional journal, past-Chair of the Canadian Dental Association’s Committee on Clinical and Scientific Affairs, and past-President of the Canadian Association of Public Health Dentistry.

Grace Bradley obtained her DDS degree at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry in 1979, after which she trained in the Oral Pathology residency program from 1980 to 1983. She received her MSc. degree in 1984 and continued research training as a fellow of the Medical Research Council of Canada at the Ontario Cancer Institute / Princess Margaret Hospital from 1983 – 1987. She obtained her fellowship in Oral Pathology at the Royal College of Dentists of Canada in 1986 and was appointed as Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto in 1987 and cross-appointed as staff dentist (Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine) at the Department of Dentistry, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center. Currently she holds the appointment of Professor and Director of the graduate program in Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine at U. of Toronto and Director of the Oral Pathology laboratory. She has participated in the Oral Pathology Diagnostic Service at the Faculty of Dentistry since 1987. Her academic interests are the use of virtual microscopy in undergraduate and graduate teaching of Oral Pathology, and the pathology of oral squamous carcinoma and precursor lesions.
Biography:
Dr. Marco Magalhaes is a clinician-scientist, director of the Cancer Invasion and Metastasis Laboratory (CIMlab) at the Faculty of Dentistry, staff oral pathologist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and assistant professor at the Faculty of Dentistry, cross-appointed to Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Magalhaes received his PhD in cell biology at the University of Toronto in 2009 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Cancer Centre before returning to the University of Toronto to complete his residency in Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine. Dr. Magalhaes has several research projects in the area of oral cancer and oral pathology and is a member of the Network for Canadian Oral Health and Research (NCOHR) oral cancer group. His main area of interest is the progression of oral lesions to oral cancer and understanding how the oral microenvironment can influence malignant transformation. The basic tools of motivational interviewing will be addressed and shown how they can be impactful in highlighting the core issues of oral health. Course Outline:
One of the most common sequela associated with dentistry and dental treatment is acute postoperative pain. Almost every procedure associated with dental treatment has the potential to cause some degree of postoperative pain requiring multifaceted management. Today’s clinician has a large armamentarium of pharmacological agents to draw from to control acute postoperative pain. Depending on the anticipated severity of post-operative pain these agents may include acetaminophen, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs), and opioids. Participants in this course will be introduced to evidence-based information related to the basic mechanisms of pain, the pharmacology of analgesics, and the rationale for the selection of an analgesic for the treatment of acute odontogenic pain. Also, other newer analgesics (particularly used for chronic facial and TMJ pain) will be discussed. The common adverse Drug Reactions and Drug Interactions associated with these agents will also be discussed. Finally, in this lecture, I will review special topics such as Geriatrics, pregnancy and lactation and other special situations requiring special caution on the part of the clinician when indicating analgesic treatment.

- Review and discuss the pharmacology of the most common analgesics used in dentistry to treat acute and chronic pain.

Dr. Aviv Ouanounou is an assistant professor of pharmacology and Preventive Dentistry at the faculty of dentistry, University of Toronto. He received both his DDS and MSc at the University of Toronto. He teaches pharmacology and Preventive Dentistry to undergraduate and graduate students and is also a clinical instructor and Treatment Plan Coordinator. Dr. Ouanounou won numerous teaching awards including wining “Best Teacher of the Year Award” three times: in 2013, 2015 and just recently in 2019. Also, Dr. Ouanounou is the recipient of the 2014-2015 prestigious Dr. Bruce Hord Master Teacher Award for excellence in teaching at the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Toronto. Participant interaction is invited regarding the crisis in oral health in the dental practice and to motivate preventive solutions.

Biography:
Sherry impacts the lives of people globally with her dental hygiene life focus to “assist people to attain optimum oral health through research, education and clinical practice”. Sherry graduated with her Dip.DH (UofA), BDSc and MSc (UBC). She has published in the Vietnam Journal of Medicine and Pharmacy, the Canadian Journal of Dental Hygiene, the International Journal of Dental Hygiene and the Dental Health Journal (UK). Sherry was awarded the ‘World Dental Hygiene Award in Research’ by SUNSTAR for oral cancer and cultural factors in Vietnam in 2010.
