Course Outline:
Altered nerve function will often vary from patient to patient. Whether the injury stems from iatrogenic treatment or is a function of physiological change, accurate diagnosis is paramount in successful management. This lecture will review nerve injuries as well as non-odontogenic pain.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of the course the clinician will be able to:

Diagnose and classify degrees of nerve injuries.
Establish an algorithm for clinically assessing nerve injuries.
Establish an algorithm for diagnosis of non-odontogenic orofacial pain.
Be aware of management strategies for common orofacial pain disorders.

TOPICS IN ORAL PATHOLOGY & DERMATOLOGY: WHAT EVERY DENTIST SHOULD KNOW

Common oral pathology
This course will review the most lesions referred for oral pathology assessment, including white lesions, pigmented lesion, autoimmune disorders as well as variations of normal anatomy.

HPV-associated head and neck malignancy

Human papilloma virus is associated with benign and malignant lesions that the dentist should be aware of.

Clinical presentation.
Emerging strategies for prevention and dental implications.

Biography:
Dr. Hagen B. Klieb is an oral pathologist and staff clinician at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, where he runs the Oral Pathology Clinic in the Department of Dental and Maxillofacial Sciences. He has cross appointment to the Department of Laboratory Medicine and is part of the Head and Neck pathology team.

Dr. Klieb is active in post-graduate medical and dental education as well as research with his primary interest being novel treatments for autoimmune disorders. Dr Klieb is also the lead of the Oral Biopsy Unit at LifeLabs, which services dentists across the province of Ontario.

Dr. Peter Ta is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon who practices full scope Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He received his DDS at the University of Western Ontario (2009). Subsequently, he completed a one-year general practice residency at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, followed by specialty training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Toronto (2014). During specialty training, he completed a Masters of Science (MSc) in the field of bone biology, with particular focus on bone grafting and regeneration.

Dr. Ta is a staff surgeon at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and Trillium Health Partners. He is an associate in dentistry at the University of Toronto, in the department of Oral Surgery. He is an active member of the Halton Peel Dental Association, Ontario Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the Ontario Dental Association.
