Course Outline:
Without sound objectives and proper treatment planning mechanics, the functional and aesthetic needs of the patients could easily be overlooked in orthodontic malocclusions. While cephalometric analyses help provide a rough estimate of skeletal and dental relationships, treatment goals need to be developed accordingly with the face and ultimate position of the incisors. In essence, the primary key to success is to optimize the direction and amount of tooth movement required within each arch quadrant per the patients' anatomy, function, and aesthetic. In this presentation, aesthetic and functional challenges of orthodontics patients will be demonstrated using case examples while addressing the infamous controversies such as expansion and tooth extractions.

Biography:
Dr. Sercan Akyalcin graduated from the Orthodontic Program at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Currently he serves as the chair and director of the advanced education program of Orthodontics at Tufts Uiversity School of Dental Medicine. In his career as a dental educator and orthodontist,he has published more than 50 peer-reviewed papers, ten book chapters,co-authored an orthodontic textbook. Dr. Akyalcin and has received many prestigious awards, including the American Association of Orthodontists Full-Time Faculty and American Association of Orthodontists Foundation Fellowship and Biomedical Research Awards. He serves actively on the editorial board of the Angle Orthodontist and some other prominent orthodontic and dental journalsl. Dr. Akyalcin has been honored as an invited speaker at many national and international meetings.
