INFLAMMATION, PERIODONTITIS AND OVERALL HEALTH
09:00-16:00
CATEGORY 2 – 6 CE POINTS
Course Outline:
Linkages between periodontitis and overall health have been proposed for numerous years without a true understanding of the mechanisms underlying these connections. Recent findings however, now suggest that inflammation is at the core of these relationships. As research continues to evolve rapidly in this emerging discipline, it is critical that oral health professionals have a thorough understanding of the inflammatory process in the body and the mechanisms involved linking oral and systemic health. Additionally, practitioners must be fully informed of the most current developments and deficiencies in the literature in order to provide the best counsel and care for their patients. This presentation will focus on new developments in the critical role of inflammation and its impact on the whole area of oral-systemic medicine along with a discussion of the most current research outcomes in not only more established oral-systemic linkages, but several newly proposed relationships. The role of oral health professionals in this dynamic new area of health will be discussed including suggested therapies and strategies for improving the overall health of the public.

THE MISSING DIMENSION: The art of patient communication
10:30-12:00
CATEGORY 2 – 1.5 CE POINTS
Course Outline:
Have you invested time and money to acquire both leading edge, research-based clinical skills and the best technology on the market…only to watch them gather dust as patient “pass” on treatment?
Every dentist’s dream is to do the dentistry they love with patients who want it while working less and earning more. But even the best dentists rarely realize the dream because dental practice success is not determined by clinical expertise.
Patients are more likely to accept suggested treatment when the treatment is presented in terms of their wants and priorities.
When patients hear their own priorities, concerns, and desires reflected in clinical care conversations, they feel heard and validated, which leads to higher rates of trust and case acceptance. Learn to approach the patient communication dance as an art as well as science, with choreography for every situation as well as techniques for dynamic improvisation.
In this transformative course designed for the entire team, Dr. Angela Mulrooney outlines a system tailored to build the verbal and nonverbal communication skills that are critical to selling modern, advanced dentistry. By placing the patient experience in its rightful place - at the center of every conversation and interaction - you will unlock the secrets of a happy, thriving, profitable practice.

Biography:
Dr. Angela Mulrooney turned a run-down clinic into a cutting-edge practice that was referred to by colleagues for full-mouth reconstruction, I.V. sedation, and sleep apnea therapy. In doing so, she more than doubled her hourly production while working 50% fewer hours at 28 years of age. After sustaining a career ending injury, she decided to turn tragedy into opportunity by sharing her credibility and production-boosting secrets through practice management and social media marketing to help talented colleagues realize their full potential clinically and entrepreneurially.

pain management and analgesics use in the dental office: an overview
13:00-16:00
CATEGORY 1 CORE – 3 CE POINTS
Course Outline:
One of the most common sequela associated with dentistry and dental treatment is acute postoperative pain. Almost every procedure associated with dental treatment has the potential to cause some degree of postoperative pain requiring multifaceted management. Today’s clinician has a large armamentarium of pharmacological agents to draw from to control acute postoperative pain. Depending on the anticipated severity of post-operative pain these agents may include acetaminophen, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs), and opioids. Participants in this course will be introduced to evidence-based information related to the basic mechanisms of pain, the pharmacology of analgesics, and the rationale for the selection of an analgesic for the treatment of acute odontogenic pain. Also, other newer analgesics (particularly used for chronic facial and TMJ pain) will be discussed. The common adverse Drug Reactions and Drug Interactions associated with these agents will also be discussed. Finally, in this lecture, I will review special topics such as Geriatrics, pregnancy and lactation and other special situations requiring special caution on the part of the clinician when indicating analgesic treatment.

ORAL HEALTH RISKS AND CULTURAL HABITS
14:30-16:00
CATEGORY 2 – 1.5 CE CREDITS
Course Outline:
We see a broad mix of people from global cultures as patients in our dental practices. Do you know the specific cultural health risks and habits that can cause oral diseases and cancer?
Oral disease is not only epidemic in some parts of the resource-poor world, but also shockingly prevalent in our resource-rich, affluent world. The work of the oral health provider is more important than ever due to global trends and the alarming rise in oral cancer incidence rates. Oral health professionals are in the best position to notice mucosal changes that may be pre-cancerous or cancerous and make the patient aware of them. Those discoveries may save patients’ lives.
This course raises oral health professionals’ awareness of unique risks associated with widespread cultural and social oral habits, such as chewing betel nut, khat, smokeless tobacco, and using coca leaf or kola nut. Understanding the social and cultural context of these practices is integral to helping patients alleviate and overcome adverse effects on oral health, human wellness, and global health. This course illustrates how culturally homogenous but geographically dispersed populations can have a profound effect on local dental practices as people migrate worldwide.
Make global connection and knowledge transfer about oral cancer, disease prevention, and oral health your superpower as you promote overall health. Participants will be powerfully engaged with graphic images and videos from 15 years of global research on cultural oral habits, with a specific focus on research based in Vietnam. Participant interaction is invited regarding the crisis in oral health in the dental practice and to motivate preventive solutions.
Describe the benefits of awareness of oral cancer to both patient and provider Recognize the cultures which exhibit high oral risk behaviors and what those behaviors are Explain the results achieved through increased awareness of cultural risk habits Demonstrate skills and competence when seeing patients for oral exams to detect oral lesions Create a professional development plan to continue to learn and implement the awareness of global trends in oral cancer.
